A Guide to Successful Deep Sea Fishing

Deep sea fishing is an exhilarating experience and something you will remember for the rest of your life. If you are new to deep sea fishing, or have only tried it once or twice, then in this brief guide we will offer some tips to help make your deep sea fishing adventure a day you will never forget.

Be Prepared

Do a bit of research on the company you’ve chosen to go with and study their website so you have some idea what to expect on the day. You will also want to familiarise yourself with what the fishing charter provides – fishing gear, food, water etc. – so you know what you need to bring along with you. Also be sure to pay a visit to your local pharmacy to pick up some travel sickness tablets. Don’t want to be out on the high seas looking all green around the gills.

What Fish Are You Likely to Catch?

This largely depends on the location, but if you book a fishing charter offshore from the Gold Coast you are very likely to hook up one of the following, or maybe more:

  • Tuna
  • Wahoo
  • Tailor
  • Trevally
  • Snapper
  • Jewfish
  • Marlin
  • Trag
  • Tuskfish
  • Mackerel
  • Cobia

Quite a juicy selection of fish for sure. Catching and landing even just one of the above would make for a great day out on the open seas.

Always Listen to the Crew

The crew on board your deep sea fishing charter is there for your safety, as well as to offer assistance when you land the big one. Unless you are a veteran and seasoned deep sea fishing expert, always heed the advice of the crew. This applies to safety precautions, what gear to use, what kind of bait to lure the type of fish you want to catch, and how best to bring it in successfully once you’ve hooked one.

Bring a Hat and Sunscreen

You don’t want to be fried like one of the fish you land out in the hot Queensland sun, so make sure you bring a hat and sunscreen. It would be a good idea to include those sunglasses as well, and don’t forget the camera.

Enjoy the Overall Adventure

Don’t just make the day all about catching big fish. Enjoy the ride, the experience and the adventure of being out on the open ocean with other like-minded people. If you hook the big one, that’s great, but don’t set yourself up to return home disappointed if you don’t. Deep sea fishing is an all round package, so best to view it that way.
